A Beginners Course in Photography

Course information: The aim of this course is to develop knowledge, understanding and skills required to practice the art of photography for beginners. Students will learn how to handle a photographic camera, diﬀerent types of basic equipment and understand their applications. Learners will be guided on how to achieve a good exposure, how to understand light, how to compose a photograph and how to create their own photographic images from the shooting stage till the post-editing stage.
Progression through the course allows learners to critically assess their photographic practices. Learners will acquire the ability to understand the uses and implications of diﬀerent aspects of techniques and technologies, and will also be able to creatively review the visual impact of their work and understand the eﬀect that the use of diﬀerent techniques and technologies will have on their work. As the students progress through the course, their personal experience and learning will oﬀer a better understanding of photographic media, techniques and technologies and be able to formulate their preferences and style in their own photographic work.
This course will be given in 10 lessons, each to be delivered by an experienced and advanced member of the Malta Photographic Society, thus students will beneﬁt from the resources of knowledge gathered throughout the years by the Society ’s most experienced members. Notes will be provided after each and every lesson. Applicants who attend 80% of the lessons will be awarded a participation certificate. Applicants are to be 16 years of age or older and lessons will be conducted in English if foreign students enrol for this course.

On completion of this Course you will be able to:
- Understand basic camera controls and speciﬁc features of the camera, gain knowledge on the various types of lenses and their functions and acquire skills in the use of peripheral important accesories
- Record and produce photographic images through a good exposure, knowledge of natural light and usage of artiﬁcial lighting setups and the ability to compose subject elements by following established composition guidelines.
- Build own basic photographic studio and learn how to photograph still life objects, understand the skills required to shoot attractive portraits and explore the ﬁeld of low light photography.
- Gather knowledge on how to start using modern image editing software for the editing of your captured images and how to critically assess own work.
The fee for this course is €140 (which includes one year free membership with the Society)

Sessions will be delivered at the Malta Photographic Society, 137, Old Bakery Street, Valletta. In the eventuality that the Health Authorities issue any mandatory Covid-19 mitigation measures, and the course cannot be held at the club, the sessions will be delivered remotely or postponed to a later date. Your safety is our priority, thus in such cases, we need to take the necessary precautions to safeguard your health.
At the Malta Photographic Society, the tutors make sure learning photography is fun and informative. We want that learning photography is a rewarding experience.
The Malta Photographic Society reserves the right to shift any planned lessons from one date to another if the tutor reports sick, is unfortunately confined in quarantine, or for other personal justified reasons. In such a situation, the lesson will be postponed to another date as agreed by the MPS Course Co-Ordinator, the tutor and the students attending this course.
